EDEKA Glücksburg: Improving Store Operations with TOMRA RollPac

Glücksburg, Germany: In the picturesque town of Glücksburg, the EDEKA store has been a cornerstone of the community for over 40 years. With a sprawling 2,000 m² sales area, the store has continually evolved to meet the needs of its customers. Recently, the store has taken a significant step forward in efficiency and work environment by implementing the vertical backroom solution TOMRA RollPac.

Handles high volume

Peter Saur, the owner of EDEKA Glücksburg, highlights the store’s unique challenges. “We have an extremely high volume of one-way bottles from guests who bring them back from the beach and we do turn over quite a high volume of bottles during the season he explains. To manage this, the store has two TOMRA T9 Bottle Crate reverse vending machines facing the customers and now they are paired with two TOMRA RollPac machines in the backroom, ensuring smooth and efficient operations even during peak times.

Flexible and Space-Saving Design

Given the store’s unique layout, flexibility was a crucial factor in choosing the new system. “The store has been expanded four times over the last 40 years, so it’s not rectangular and straight-lined,” Saur notes. The ability to position the machines flexibly and utilize vertical space rather than floor space has enhanced the store’s operations and employee mobility.

 It was important that the machines could be positioned as flexibly as possible.

Positive Employee Feedback

Store manager Fabian Rohweder notes that the new system has received positive feedback from employees. “The available space in the back and the handling have improved considerably. We can store more empties, which increases our efficiency” . The improved working conditions have made a noticeable difference in daily operations.

Quick and Efficient Bag Changes

Thomas Öri, the beverage department manager and deputy store manager, praises the ease of use. “Emptying TOMRA RollPac works much better than before. Changing the bags is much quicker. We take the roller cage with the full bag out and put the roller cage with an empty bag in, close the door and that is it.” he explains. This efficiency ensures that customers do not have to wait while bags are being changed.

It enables us to work more efficiently and have a more streamlined handling of the machines.
