Type

Defect

Symptoms and Signs

Cause & Disease Development

Oleo is caused when pressure during harvest damages the oil sacks. Usually, this occurs because the fruit was picked while it was wet.

More Information

Although oleo occurs during harvest, oleo will usually begin to appear after several days of storage.

Additionally, oleo will become rot.

Type

Symptoms and Signs

Cause & Disease Development

Clear rot is caused by the fungus Penicillium Digitatum or Penicillium Italicum. Infection usually occurs after an injury, such as a puncture. However, healthy fruit can also be infected.

Brown rot is caused by phytophthora hlbemalls or Phytophthora citrophthora.

Citrus black rot is caused by phylogenetically distinct lineages of Alternaria alternata.

Sour rot is caused by Geotrichum citri-aurantii fungi. It can also be a continued infection caused by existing rot. It appears like clear rot but has a sour smell.

End check typically occurs due to cracking at the blossom or navel.

Alternaria alternata fungal infections occur when the fungi is washed into the blossom during fruit development.

More Information

Rot can occur in the field, during post-harvest, or in storage.

Subcategory

Type

Defect

Symptoms and Signs

Pliable or soft fruit is soft to the touch and usually misshapen or split when packed in the bins. However, it is not puffy.

Cause & Disease Development

This defect occurs when the albedo weakens, creating a weak internal structure. Picking and handling as well as fruit maturity play a role in the susceptibility of fruit to this kind of damage.

More Information

This defect is uncommon in oranges.

Rind Breakdown

Defect

Rind breakdown

Other Names

RBD

Subcategory

Type

Defect

Symptoms and Signs

Cause & Disease Development

Rind break occurs when the albedo breaks down and leads to juice leaking from the vesicles and into the albedo or flavedo. The juice then damages the cells, leading to decay. There are many causes including, blossom-end clearing (or stylar end clearing, wet bottom, rind breakdown).
