TOMRA, a world leader in reverse vending machines for drink container recycling, and the Swedish wearable tech company Turnpike have initiated a strategic collaboration to provide retailers in Sweden with real-time notifications about reverse vending status, direct to their smartwatches. This partnership promotes digitization and real-time communication for recycling, with a focus on upgrading both the daily operation of the machines and the customer experience and store staff's workday.

Having a modern and well-functioning drink container return point in store is becoming increasingly important for the grocery retail sector. People are increasingly returning bottles and cans, and stores with the best user experience can in turn attract customer footfall. As recycling becomes a real competitive advantage, the need to remove all conceivable friction from the user experience and facilitate daily operations increases.

Turnpike integration with TOMRA

The system, which is easy to set up and use, can, for example, in real-time inform the right person in the store to go to a reverse vending machine where a customer needs assistance or where a problem has occurred. The system also notifies store staff when, for example, a storage cabinet in the machine is 95% full, so the right personnel can act before a problem arises.

"Collaborating with TOMRA and creating an even better customer experience and even greater environmental value is a dream for us at Turnpike. But, more importantly, it is a dream for the customer and employees who experience less friction and the ability to act proactively," says Jonas Borglin, CEO of Turnpike.

Thanks to this innovative solution, it becomes easier for stores to use their resources more efficiently. With a Samsung smartwatch on their wrist, store employees are notified quickly and discreetly, increasing the level of service that provides a positive customer experience.

This collaboration with Turnpike enables us to take customer-centered and efficient return handling to a whole new level. Real-time updates directly to store personnel give them the tools to act proactively on reverse vending needs.

Turnpike's system with Samsung's smartwatches gives employees the tools to act on real-time data, initiated by customers, employees, and machines - creating a work environment with increased efficiency, customer focus, and increased job satisfaction. The service is used, among other things, to ensure that queues do not occur at the cash registers and that customers receive assistance when interacting with screens and buttons in the stores. The next step is to connect the system to sensors and cameras – all to improve and facilitate daily operations and improve the customer and employee journey.

"This is fantastic news for us in the grocery retail industry striving to be at the forefront of the customer and employee journey. The drink container return point is central to us today, and now we can be proactive before a problem arises and remove unnecessary friction for both customers and staff," says Markus Wahlgren, store manager for Stora Coop Visby.
